The Benefits of Separation
Nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, and recent statistics don’t show the number of divorces decreasing anytime soon. Many couples do not realize, however, that before they take that final step to end their marriages, there are things they can do that can potentially salvage the broken relationship. Separation is one of those things.
Separation is a very simple concept. When a couple separates, the spouses remained legally married. In practice, however, they live apart from each other. Some would question the point of separation, but it has several benefits.
One benefit is that separation allows couples to cool off and assess their situation level-headedly. When they are near one another, in the context that caused the marital dispute, couples’ emotions inevitably get involved. By living separately, however, spouses can reflect on their situation without provocation from one another.
Moreover, they can experience living alone and see how it feels. In the end, they may realize that they miss their partners. Having spent so much time with their spouses, couples may realize that they actually love their partners and would not be happy without them.
Another benefit is that separated couples can continue to enjoy benefits that legally married couples are entitled to. For example, married couples get to pay less taxes. Moreover, as couples, people get cheaper health insurance rates, whereas singles have to pay more.
Separation has many benefits, and it is a viable alternative to a divorce, even if for a short period of time. It is important, however, to execute separation correctly so that all legal matters are addressed.
