3 Terms and Concepts That You Should Know for Your Divorce Case

Preparing for divorce can prove difficult for many individuals, especially due to the large amount of legal jargon commonly used in these cases. Understanding this seemingly indecipherable language is a serious issue for people considering divorce, but an attorney may be able to explain the legal terms and concepts that will affect their divorce case.

If you’re thinking about moving forward with a divorce and need legal advice, we may be able to help you. For more information regarding your options when considering divorce, contact an experienced West Palm Beach divorce attorney of Eric N. Klein & Associates, P.A., today by calling 561-353-2800.

Terms to Know for Divorce Proceedings

There are several important words and concepts that a person should know when they are preparing for divorce proceedings. These three examples are a good place to start, but a person may want to consult with an attorney to learn more:

#1: Discovery

Before a divorce begins, a person will need to bring forward all of their financial information and other important records and facts. This information will be used to divide property and help the court make other crucial decisions during the divorce proceedings, such as alimony. The act of bringing up all of this information is known as discovery.

#2: Joint Custody

In cases of divorce involving parents with minor children, parents may be given joint legal and/or joint physical custody over a child. Legal custody allows a parent to make important decisions regarding the child’s life, including school, medical options, and religious upbringing. Physical custody, on the other hand, largely refers to where the child will live.

#3: Quit Claim

In some cases, a person may not want to fight over a particular piece of property or may not want the property at all. They can file what is known as a quit claim, which legally drops their claim to that piece of property. This is common if someone doesn’t want to argue over a major piece of property such as a house or vehicle.
