Adopted Children and Divorce
Divorce is almost always a confusing matter, especially when the custody of your children is in question. Everything you own, from your house to your cars to your record collection is getting split up and it can be painful to realize that you may not be able to spend as much time with your children as you would like.
This process can be especially confusing when you have an adopted child. Because of the nature of adoption, this child is probably already emotionally confused and has probably already gone through some serious emotional strain. Naturally, as a parent, you want to spare your child as much unnecessary pain as possible. But like it or not, you and your spouse will have to decide who will become the guardian of the child.
Children in general often find divorce especially difficult because they may not understand why mommy and daddy are splitting up. Many children experience confusion and emotional problems as a result of divorce. It is important to understand that adopted children in particular are liable to undergo a good degree of strain during the proceedings. As with all divorces involving children, it is important to keep a few things in mind:
- No matter what happens, you will still be that child’s parent.
- Even if your divorce is acrimonious, it is important to put your differences aside when it comes to the children. They shouldn’t be caught in the crossfire.
- Try to maintain some normalcy in your relationship with your children. Let them know that your love for them is unaffected by the divorce and that the divorce is in no way their fault.
