At-Home Paternity Tests
One new phenomenon in the growing field of paternity tests is the at-home, or do-it-yourself, paternity kit. These kits allow people to take one of the most sensitive, personal tests they may ever take – one to establish biological paternity – in the comfort of their own homes. Paternity tests can help you answer questions about child support and other delicate issues, and an at-home test can be a less nerve-wracking alternative to lab DNA tests.

Taking Paternity Tests At Home
Several pharmaceutical companies are now offering at-home paternity tests. These kits come with swabs to gather cell samples from the inside cheeks of the child and the potential father. While the mother’s samples are optional, they are strongly recommended, as they remove some of the potential for error. The swabs are then mailed to DNA labs, where they are analyzed and the results are returned. Results can usually be obtained online, by the phone, or through the mail in three to five business days, with companies promising results with 98% or above accuracy.
Criticism of Home Paternity Tests
Some criticize these home tests because of the lack of oversight by the FDA and other government administrations. Others question the supposed accuracy of the results. Many legal experts say that the do-it-yourself nature of the tests means that the results may not stand up well in courts. Any information gathered from the tests should be verified by more official means before going to trial.
