Am I in Contempt?
Contempt of court is a court order, and is a judge’s strongest tool to keep order in the court. In general, it is issued when an individual or a group has not shown the court and the judge the proper respect which the law requires. You may be found to be in contempt of court if you:
- Have disobeyed a previous order of the court, or broken a law while in court.
- You have, through your action or inaction, disrespected the authority of the court or the judge.
- Your actions or behavior have made the functioning of the court impossible.
- You have published or publicly said things that jeopardize the possibility of a fair trial.
In a divorce hearing, outbursts and frequent displays of emotion can cause you to be found in contempt of court. When in doubt, err on the side of caution. Always be courteous and respectful.
