Coping with Divorce
It can be easy to feel depressed when your marriage comes to an end. All the things you’ve worked for over the years are falling apart around you. All of a sudden your life is filled with questions: what’s going to happen to the kids? How will this affect my finances? How will my life have to change as a result of this divorce? The experience can all be very overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to understand that, as painful as it is, life does go on.
Moving On
As painful as it is, moving on is an important part of the divorce. After awhile, the pain will dissipate and you will be ready to move on with your life. Here are some tips to help the process be a bit smoother and shorter:
- Use your friends and family for support. They want to be part of your life and can help you get through the difficult times. Be aware, though, that they may have complex feelings of their own about your divorce. So while you should be honest about your feelings with them, be careful not to overburden them.
- A therapist can often help. Professional therapists can help you work through your pain and identify the source. They can often help you understand the causes of your marriage’s end, and can help prevent them from happening again in the future.
- Take your time. It’s natural to go through a grieving process. But don’t let this become a long-term habit.
