Domestic Partnerships
Domestic partnerships have become increasingly popular in recent years, but most people may not understand exactly what they entail. In short, domestic partnerships are simply a personal relationship between two people. They usually live together, share many of the responsibilities that a married couple would, and also divide assets.
One of the things that makes this so difficult to understand is that, technically, domestic partnerships do not constitute civil unions or legal entities. In some states, though, they are recognized as such. Although only a few states currently have laws recognizing domestic partnerships as civil unions, the public in many places is becoming more and more demanding about instituting these statutes.
Much of the confusion about these partnerships and what legal responsibilities and rights each person has stems from the fact that the laws differ so much by state. In some states, very different statutes are in place to stipulate the rights and limits of a domestic partnership or civil unions. Others are unclear, and still others forbid many of these domestic partnerships from having any legal recognition or status at all.
