Explaining Divorce to Children
One of the most difficult parts of a divorce is trying to explain to your children that mom and dad won’t be living together anymore. This can be difficult for children to understand, since everything they know about their lives will change dramatically. Many parents struggle with how to deliver such unpleasant and frightening news to the people they love most.
The following are some pointers that can help make this difficult conversation a little bit easier:
- Explain carefully that it is not the children’s fault. This seems obvious, but it is also very important. Explain to your children that the divorce is in no way their fault and that they shouldn’t feel any guilt or blame.
- Tell your children that no matter what, mom and dad will still be their parents. Explain to them that you will always be there for them and that your love for them is unaffected by the divorce.
- Be positive. Tell your children that things will turn out OK. It may be scary and new at first, but that things will work out in the end.
- Emphasize that, through it all, mom and dad will always love them, no matter what.
- Be civil. Even though you might have some ill feelings towards your spouse or ex-spouse, you should act maturely and civilly around one another for the sake of your children.
