More on Pets and Divorce
A new court case in Pennsylvania is making people reconsider the traditional view of pets in divorce. Normally, the courts consider animals to be property when considering divorces, meaning that they can be divided up without a whole lot of regard to who would be the better owner of the animal. Naturally, this has made a lot of pet-owning divorcees unhappy, and they’re starting to fight back. Divorce Cases involving Pets
Doreen Houseman of Gloucester, PA, has recently brought a case to court involving her beloved dog Dexter being (in her mind) unfairly given to her ex-husband following a divorce. She and a group of animal-rights lawyers have been attempting to use the Michael Vick case – in which the NFL quarterback was imprisoned for running an illegal dog fighting ring – as a precedent establishing that the court can actually intervene in matters concerning the well-being of animals.
Houseman is attempting to establish that her husband is not providing for Dexter’s health and happiness as well as she would, and that he only wants Dexter as a way of being vindictive and cruel towards her. While it has yet to be seen if the ongoing case will play a part in changing the way US divorce courts treat animals in divorces, it might very well have an influence on the way lawyers treat these cases.
