Presumption of Joint Custody
Most people tend to agree that, all other things being equal, it is best if a child can have a relationship with both of their parents, regardless of marital status. This is often an unpopular idea with some parents, as after a divorce they are adamantly opposed to the idea of their former spouse spending time with their child, but the courts tend to agree that it is best if the child can be raised by both parents.
Joint custody is exactly what the name implies: a shared custody of the child between both parents. This is especially effective if the parents live close together and have similar incomes and lifestyles so that the child can feel as comfortable as possible when moving back and forth between the two homes.
Some states and courts have a preference that joint custody be the standard when determining who the child should live with. Many states, including Florida, have a law in place that leans towards the presumption of joint custody. This means that, essentially, courts will look to joint custody as the preferred method of resolving the issue unless there is a reason not to do so.
