Staying Close to Your Kids with Sports
When parents get divorced, fathers sometimes have trouble maintaining their relationships with their
children. Since physical custody is most often awarded to mothers, fathers find the time – and the quality
of the time – they spend with their children greatly reduced. It can be a frustrating but seemingly
unavoidable problem. Worse, as families spend less time together, they become more distant; even when
they do spend time together, there can be an invisible barrier up, a lack of common ground.
You don’t want this to happen to you and your children. Fortunately, there are things you can do to
prevent this. Structuring the time you have together, and providing a common activity can greatly enhance
your relationship with your children. Team sports offer just such an opportunity.
All over the country, there are sports leagues and teams which children of all ages can join, in every
sport from baseball to football to soccer, and far beyond. Sports are a great way to teach kids discipline,
responsibility, and loyalty, all hallmarks of mature and healthy adults. Better still, participating
in little league athletics with your children allows you to see them grow in front of you, to put aside
their own needs for the needs of the team, to learn to be a productive member of society.
Sports teams are often in need of volunteers of all stripes, and being involved with your child’s team
can give you something to bond over, something to share. And involvement in sports is not just limited
to fathers. Mothers can be just as involved in all aspects of athletics.
