The Fathers’ Rights Movement
Think about child custody for a moment. If you picture the average divorced couple, who are the kids with? Virtually all of us assume that the mother will get custody of the children, and if she doesn’t, we assume there is a reason like drug use or mental illness to blame. To many Americans, single fathers are widowers, not divorcees. However, the father’s rights movement is working to change this.
The fathers’ rights movement is a loosely affiliated group of political activists who are interested in changing the way family law is practiced in America. They feel that theirs is a civil rights movement, because they are being denied what they feel are the inalienable rights to share child custody with their ex-wives.
Members of the movement believe that they are the victims of a gender bias in family law that automatically believes that mothers are the better caregivers in a family and therefore should be granted custody in most cases. While this may or may not be true, it is true that women are far more likely to receive custody of the children in divorce cases than men.
The primary goal of the fathers’ rights movement is to raise awareness for their movement and to establish hard and fast rights for fathers on a governmental level. Most members of the movement had little prior experience in family law before they went through a divorce. Instead, the movement has grown out of a group of men of different backgrounds and political beliefs who share the desire to change the way family law works.
