The Four Types of Alimony
As most people know, alimony, or spousal support, is a type of arrangement between divorced couples in which one spouse pays the other money as a form of compensation. What many people do not know is that there isn’t just one type of alimony, but many. There are, in fact, four major types of alimony payments, each to address a particular type of need. Many spousal support settlements are combinations of multiple types of alimony arrangements. The four types are: permanent alimony, temporary alimony, rehabilitative alimony, and reimbursement alimony.

The Types
The four types of alimony are:
- Permanent alimony. This type of alimony is paid to allow the spouse with less earning potential to maintain his or her quality of life. It is paid until the death of the payer or the payee, or until the payee remarries.
- Temporary alimony. Temporary alimony is paid during a legal separation, while a divorce is still pending.
- Rehabilitative alimony. Rehabilitative alimony is paid to help a spouse afford education or job training in order to increase his or her earning potential.
- Reimbursement alimony. Reimbursement alimony is paid to reimburse a spouse for an expense, such as helping pay for college.
