How is child custody determined?
Physical child custody is a term that describes where a child will live on a daily basis. A court usually awards physical custody based on who it feels will be better able to protect and nurture the child. Because child support payments can be made to support the child financially, income of a spouse is not normally considered when awarding custody. Additionally, courts more frequently award physical custody to the mother. Joint custody is also fairly common.
