What is spousal support?
Spousal support, or alimony as it’s more frequently called, is financial support one spouse pays to another after divorce. The principle is that, during marriage, both spouses have an obligation to support one another, and that in certain cases, that obligation continues even after divorce. Alimony is not a guaranteed right, but is common after divorce. The terms of alimony vary from case to case, often depending on factors such as length of marriage, the income of both spouses, and who is at fault in the dissolution of the marriage.
